Box Score 2 SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Clutch hitting and solid pitching helped guide the Susquehanna softball team to a doubleheader sweep of visiting Juniata on Sunday afternoon.
The Crusader bats came alive at the end of game one in an eventual 9-1, six-inning victory. In game two, the SU bats provided just enough offense to give pitcher Jamie Fesinstine (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) her fifth win of the spring as SU won a 3-1 decision.
Leadoff hitter Brianna Murphy (Hazlet, N.J./Mater Dei Prep) was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI in game one. Lauren Creamer (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) added three hits and three RBI.
Starting pitcher Morgan Lewis (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) tossed all six innings, giving up one run (unearned) with seven strikeouts.
The Crusaders (11-4, 4-0) made it 1-0 in the bottom of the second when Cierra Omlor (Salem, N.J./Salem) scored on a fielder's choice. SU tacked on another run in the third when Stephanie Chlebove's (Northampton, Pa./Northampton Area) single plated Murphy.
The bats really got hot in the fourth when Murphy knocked a two-run homer over the fence to double Susquehanna's lead (4-0).
The Eagles managed to push one across in the top of the fifth on a Crusader error but SU got that run back and more with a three-run sixth inning. A fielding error allowed the first two runs of the inning to score before Creamer drove home Alyssa Cantalini (Kitchener, Ontario/St. David Catholic Secondary) – who had reached on said error – for a 9-1 ballgame.
Lewis came back out to start game two. She tossed the first two innings before giving way to Fesintine, who pitched the final five innings without giving up a run and striking out four.
Murphy had another hit and run scored while Creamer went 1-for-3 with one RBI, as did pinch hitter Anna Heggenstaller (Liverpool, Pa./Greenwood).
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third when Chlebove's single plated Kelly Miller (Kendall Park, N.J./South Brunswick) for the first run of the game.
In the next inning, Creamer's RBI double scored Cantalini for a two-run cushion for the Crusaders. Heggenstaller then drove in the third and final run of the game with a single to center to score Murphy.
Susquehanna returns to action on April 4 with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Landmark Conference opponent Catholic.
