Overtime Setback for Women's Lacrosse

Box Score

COLORADO SPRINGS – The Susquehanna and Augustana women's lacrosse teams were about as evenly matched as one could get until the second overtime period when the Vikings out-scored the Crusaders 1-0 to win 15-14 in a neutral site game.

The teams found themselves tied 7-7 at halftime and again at 12 at the end of regulation to force overtime.

SU's Meredith Crane (Maplewood, N.J./Columbia) tied for the game high with four goals while Kelcie Ehler (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) and Becky McHugh (Royersford, Pa./Archbishop John Carroll) each netted three. Emma Jones (Wolfeboro, N.H./Brewster Academy) picked up four assists.

Augustana (2-0) had 36 shots to Susquehanna's 29 and won 21 draw controls to SU's 12. The Crusaders (1-1) did, however, connect on 5-of-10 free position shots and goalie Carolyn Figliola (Weston, Conn./Weston) racked up 15 saves with 10 coming in the first half alone.

Susquehanna jumped out to a 3-1 lead a mere five minutes into the game before Augustana strung together five unanswered goals to go ahead 6-3 with 6:32 left in the first half.

However, the Crusaders scored four of the final five goals of the period to tie the game at seven heading into halftime.

SU opened the second half with back-to-back goals to take a 9-7 lead and remained ahead by two (10-8) on Crane's goal with 23:56 left in the half.

Augustana's Kaylee Nolan scored with 16:22 on the clock to make it 12-11. Nearly 14 minutes passed without another goal until Kendall Maduro scored for the Vikings with 2:52 to tie the game at 12 and eventually force overtime.

Ehler scored the first goal of overtime and Crane's goal with 3:10 left in the overtime period gave SU a 14-13 edge but Maduro scored with 2:01 left to tie the game at 14 and force a second overtime session.

In that sudden death second overtime, Hilary Kargl scored at the 5:44 mark to give Augustana the win.

Susquehanna is back in action on March 11 with a 6:30 p.m. game at McDaniel.
