Box Score SCRANTON, Pa. – The Susquehanna women's lacrosse team played a back-and-forth battle at Landmark Conference opponent Scranton, forcing the Royals to overtime but Scranton came out on the winning side of a 14-12 decision.
The Royals tied the game at 12 with 2:33 remaining and went to score the only two goals of overtime.
Despite the loss, Kelcie Ehler (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) had a game-high six goals while Annie McElaney (Natick, Mass./Natick) finished with three and Meredith Crane (Maplewood, N.J./Columbia) added two goals and two assists as those three accounted for 11 of the Crusaders' 12 goals.
Goalie Alyssa Rothman (Trooper, Pa./Methacton) had 12 saves and faced 35 shots in 66 minutes of action. SU had 37 shots to Scranton's 35 but won only 10 draw controls to the Royals' 20.
Ehler and McElaney scored the first two goals of the game to put Susquehanna ahead by two 16 minutes into the game. Scranton countered with two goals of its own, thus beginning a game-long back-and-forth battle.
Scranton led 4-3 with 4:33 remaining in the first half before SU closed out the period with back-to-back goals from Ehler for a 5-4 Susquehanna lead at halftime.
Three-straight goals from SU within the first six minutes of the second half upped the Crusaders' lead to three (8-5).
Susquehanna led 10-7 with 16 minutes to play before the Royals went on a 3-0 run that tied the game at 10 with 5:56 to play in the half.
Each team scored two more goals in regulation to keep it tied at 12 as time expired, forcing overtime.
With 2:05 left in the first overtime, Scranton's Meghan Kerr scored and less than 60 seconds later, the Royals added an insurance goal, leaving the Crusaders without enough time to attempt a comeback.
Susquehanna remains on the road to face Dickinson on April 8 at 4 p.m.
