Softball Plays in Seventh Annual Cancer Awareness Cup

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Susquehanna softball team played in the seventh-annual cancer awareness cup with Lycoming College and won both games (4-1 and 3-2) on Sunday afternoon.

In game one of the doubleheader against the Warrior, SU struck first, scoring one run in the second inning and two in the third to go up 3-0.

In the bottom of the second inning, Anna Heggenstaller (Liverpool, Pa. / Greenwood) started off with a double down the left field line. Emilie Boman (Tinton Falls, N.J. / Mater Dei Prep) followed with a single to right center to score Heggenstaller.

In the bottom of the third, Amanda Neveroski (Toms River, N.J. / Toms River North) drew a walk and scored on a triple by Alyssa Cantalini (Kitchener, Ontario / St. David Catholic Secondary). A sacrifice fly from the next batter, Lauren Creamer (Langhorne, Pa. / Neshaminy), put the Crusaders up 3-0 when Cantalini scored.

Lycoming scored in the top of the fifth inning on a walk followed by a double. SU responded with a run of its own to push the lead back to three (4-1) when Neveroski singled to right field, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Cantalini and scored when Creamer singled up the middle.

Starting pitcher Morgan Lewis (Newtown, Pa. / Council Rock North) held the Warriors to three batters in the bottom of the seventh to earn the win, bringing her record to 16-3.

Boman and Cantalini led in hits with two apiece while Creamer led in RBI's with two.

Game two would remain scoreless for both teams until Lycoming put two runs on the board in the top of the sixth. However, it would not be enough as Susquehanna answered in the bottom of the inning with three of its own to go up 3-2.

Back-to-back doubles from Brynn Musser (Selinsgrove, Pa. / Selinsgrove Area) and Leigh Ann Greenwald (Piscataway, N.J. / Immaculata) started the sixth inning off to put runners on second and third. Heather Pearson (Alexandria, Va. / Bishop Ireton) then singled and advanced to second, scoring Musser and Greenwald to tie the game at two. Danielle Vollono (Bethpage, N.Y. / Long Island Lutheran), pinch runner for Pearson, scored when Creamer singled to center field to put SU up 3-2.

Starting pitcher Jamie Fesinstine (Long, Valley, N.J. / West Morris Central) (14-2) held Lycoming to only three at-bats at the top of the seventh to earn the win.

Cierra Omlor (Salem, N.J. / Salem) and Pearson led the Crusaders in hits with two while Pearson also led in RBI's with two.
