Women's Lacrosse Headed Back to Championship

SCRANTON, Pa. – The Susquehanna women's lacrosse team is making its fourth-straight appearance in the Landmark Conference title game following Wednesday night's 16-10 semifinal win at No. 2 seed Scranton.

SU travels to No. 11 Catholic on Saturday, May 2 for a 1 p.m. conference championship game.

Against the Royals, Annie McElaney (Natick, Mass./Natick) led all players with six goals.  Meredith Crane (Maplewood, N.J./Columbia) added five goals and two assists for a game-high seven points. Brynn Reid (West Grove, Pa./Avon Grove) finished with one goal and two assists while Emma Jones (Wolfeboro, N.H./Brewster Academy), SU's all-time leader in assists, finished with three assists.

Carolyn Figliola (Weston, Conn./Weston) got the start in goal and tallied eight saves against 18 shots. The Crusader defense allowed just 24 shots by the Royals and Kelcie Ehler (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) had four caused turnovers to go along with two goals.

McElaney scored a mere 26 seconds into the game for the early, 1-0 Crusader lead. Scranton responded with three consecutive goals to take a 3-1 lead with 23:29 still to play in the half.

The Crusaders countered with three straight goals of their own to take a 4-3 advantage. Scranton briefly tied the game at four before SU scored the next four goals to go up 8-4 with 11:39 remaining in the half.

Scranton netted two of the final three goals of the period, though, to pull within three (9-6) at halftime.

The Royals accounted for the first two goals of the second half to make it a one-goal game (9-8) less than three minutes into the action. SU proceed to score five of the next six goals, though, to grab a 14-9 lead with 12:25 to play.

Scranton briefly pulled within four (14-10) with just under seven minutes to play, but McElaney and Crane scored the final two goals of the game for the final 16-10 victory.
