Softball Rallies for Two Wins over Wilkes

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WILKES BARRE, Pa. – The Susquehanna softball team took to the road to take on Wilkes in a mid-week non-conference doubleheader and came away with two wins against the Colonels.

The Crusader bats helped end game one in five innings with a 10-0 blanking of Wilkes before rallying to win 7-4 in game two.

SU had 11 hits in game one and Kelly Miller (Kendall Park, N.J./South Brunswick) went 2-for-3 with both hits coming in the form of home runs to tally five RBI for the day.

Morgan Lewis (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) picked up her eighth win of the spring with five shutout innings with six strikeouts.

Brianna Murphy (Hazlet, N.J./Mater Dei Prep) opened the game with a walk and came around to score on Amanda Neveroski's (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) one-out double to right center.

In the top of the next inning, Miller drove in two more runs with her two-run home run to right field. A Wilkes error allowed the third run of the inning to score to put SU ahead 4-0.

That 4-0 lead doubled in the third inning thanks in large part to Miller's three-run shot to right field that made it an 8-0 ballgame. Lauren Creamer (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) followed with a solo homer in the fourth to make it 9-0 and Taylor Hegedty (Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock Area) drove in the 10th run of the game with a two-out single up the middle that scored Murphy who had reached on throwing error.

The Colonels were retired in order in the bottom half of the fifth to end the game.

Game two forced Susquehanna to put on its rally caps to come back from a 4-0 deficit. Bridget Rafter (Highlands, N.J./Henry Hudson Regional) and Leigh Ann Greenwald (Piscataway, N.J./Immaculata) each tallied two hits and one RBI. Creamer added one hit and two RBI.

Like the game one, starting pitcher Jamie Fesinstine (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) went the distance, giving up four runs on six hits with three strikeouts and three walks.

Wilkes took a quick, 3-0 lead when Ally Parks knocked a three-run homer over the left field fence. The Colonels added another (unearned) run in the second to put SU in a 4-0 hole after two.

In the top of the fourth, Greenwald got the Crusaders on the board with a solo home run to center. In the fifth, an error allowed Susquehanna's first run of the inning to score before Creamer came through with a two-run, game-tying single to right for a 4-4 game.

In the sixth, Rafter broke the tie with a single up the middle and another Wilkes error made it 6-4 in favor of Susquehanna. McKayla Brady (Green Brook, N.J./Watchung Hills Regiona) plated an insurance run with a RBI single to right.

Fesinstine put two runners on base but got Lacey Bixler to foul out to first to end the game and leave two Colonels stranded.

The Crusaders return home to host Landmark Conference opponent Moravian on April 11 with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
