Cronin's Game Winner Propels Soccer Past Ursinus

Box Score

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Despite playing its second game in three days, the Susquehanna men's soccer team apparently could not get enough soccer this weekend, playing to a 2-1 overtime win against visiting Ursinus on Sunday afternoon.

Just 70 seconds into the first overtime period, Ryan Cronin (Andover, N.J./Newton) scored the game winner off an assist from Garian Lashley (Aurora, Ontario/Bill Crothers Secondary) to give the Crusaders (2-1-0) their second win in a row.

The game was an evenly played contest with SU holding a 15-11 edge in shots and each team putting six of its shots on goal. The Crusaders did take six corner kicks to the Bears' one and recorded 11 of their 15 shots over the final 46 minutes of the game.

Pedro Souza (Sao Paolo, Brazil/Gunnery School) led all players with his five shots while Sam Tana (Baldwin, Md./St. Paul's) had three shots and scored Susquehanna's first goal of the contest which tied the game at one.

Ursinus (0-2-1) struck first when Justin Mendez knocked in a Dean DerSimonian pass at the 31:05 mark. SU did not get a shot off over the final five-plus minutes of the half and the Bears remained ahead 1-0 at halftime.

Tana broke that tie 24 minutes into the second half when he connected on a penalty kick for a 1-1 game. SU's Sean Leister and Elias George each had shots in the final minutes of regulation but Leister's went wide and George's was blocked, thus forcing overtim+e.

Fortunately it took Cronin a mere 70 seconds to end the game in favor of the Crusaders when he redirected a great pass from Lashley past Ursinus goalie Vince Maiorino for the Susquehanna win.

SU returns to the road to face Lycoming on Wednesday, Sept. 9 at 5 p.m. in the annual Battle of the Boot rivalry game. Last year's contest ended in a scoreless tie.
