SCRANTON, Pa. – The Susquehanna women's swimming and diving team defeated Marywood University by a score of 163-116.
The evening started well for Susquehanna when the team took first and second in the first race of the night, the 200 yard medley relay. The team of Devon Niness, Joann Butkus, Maggie Palaski and Katie Willis won with a time of 1:52.68 while the team of Erin McElwee, Megan Duck, Ashlee Weingarten and Julia Doherty took second with a time of 1:57.24.
Caroline Henderson, Val Stearns and Isabella Cieri earned points for SU when they finished second (11:21.21), third (11:33.21) and fifth (12:13.54) in the 1000 yard freestyle. Stearns's time of 11:33.21 was a personal record (PR).
Willis and Kelsey Lessard took first and second in the 200 yard freestyle with their respective times of 1:58.50 and 2:04.43. Morgan Sattler earned the Crusaders points as well with her fifth place finish (2:11.71).
In the 100 yard backstroke, McElwee finished in first place with a time of 1:04.42 while Niness (1:05.58) and Samantha D'Amico (1:06.70) finished second and third respectively.
Duck took first in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:12.20), Paige Wagner (1:15.78) finished third and Lindsey VanKirk (1:17.00, a PR) came in fifth. Palaski, Lizzie Richart and Madeline Toohey took third, fourth and fifthin the 200 yard butterfly with respective times of 2:25.33, 2:30.85 and 2:31.13.
In the 50 yard freestyle, Susquehanna took the top three spots when Butkus finished first with her time of 25.46 while Jessica Jozefiak finished second (25.96) and Weingarten third (26.30).
Willis won the 100 yard freestyle with her time of 54.96 which was roughly four seconds faster than the second place finisher – Niness (59.14, a PR). D'Amico finished third with her time of 59.33.
In the 200 yard backstroke, Susquehanna came in second and fourth when McElwee finished in 2:19.15 and Stearns finished posted a time of 2:25.27. Butkus took first in the 200 yard breaststroke with a time of 2:35.44 while Duck (2:37.41) and Wagner (2:47.29) finished second and third respectively.
With times of 5:32.89 and 5:35.45 (a PR), VanKirk came in first and Jozefiak finished second. Lessard set a PR in the 100 yard butterfly when she won with her time of 1:03.32. Rachel Wood came in second in the three meter dive.
The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, Jan. 15 when they host Franklin and Marshall on Senior Day. The meet starts at 2 pm.
