SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Susquehanna women's swim team celebrated Senior Day by tying (131-131) with the regionally ranked No. 9 Diplomats of Franklin and Marshall College.
The Diplomats are ranked ninth in the College Swimming Coaches Association of America Northeast-South region.
The Crusaders started the day strong when the team of Devon Niness, Joann Butkus, Maggie Palaski and Katie Willis finished first in the 200 yard medley relay with their time of 1:53.11. The team of Erin McElwee, Megan Duck, Ashlee Weingarten and Julia Doherty came in third (1:57.51).
In the 1000 yard freestyle, Lindsey VanKirk, Morgan Sattler and Isabella Cieri took second (11:23.21), fourth (11:37.49) and sixth (12:21.19) respectively. Susquehanna took third (Caroline Henderson, 2:06.02), fourth (Jessica Jozefiak, 2:07.17) and fifth (Val Stearns, 2:07.41) in the 200 yard freestyle.
Niness and McElwee finished second (1:05.62) and third (1:05.64) in the 100 yard backstroke while Lizzie Richart finished fifth with her time of 1:08.43.
In the 200 yard butterfly, Kelsey Lessard finished first with her time of 2:15.91 while Palaski (2:25.33) and Madeline Toohey (2:29.66) finished fourth and fifth.
Willis won both the 50 yard and 100 yard freestyle with respective times of 25.24 and 54.60. In the 50 yard free, Doherty finished third and Samantha D'Amico finished fourth with times of 26.71 and 27.14. Jozefiak finished the 100 yard free in 58.71 for fourth place.
In the 200 yard backstroke, McElwee (2:21.42), Niness (2:22.64) and D'Amico (2:28.30, a personal record) finished fourth, fifth and sixth. Duck and Butkus took second and third with their respective times of 2:35.81 and 2:37.56 in the 200 yard breaststroke.
The 500 yard freestyle saw SU finish third, fourth and fifth as Henderson finished in 5:35.80 while VanKirk and Stearns finished in 5:38.04 and 5:38.99.
In the 100 butterfly, Palaski won with her time of 1:01.79. Weingarten came in second with her time of 1:03.10 while Richart took fifth (1:06.12).
Susquehanna finished like the team started by winning the last scored event of the meet when the team of Willis, Niness, Jozefiak and Butkus finished the 400 yard freestyle relay in 3:44.28. The second relay team composed of D'Amico, Palaski, Stearns and Doherty finished third with their time of 3:54.11.
Before the meet, Susquehanna honored nine seniors: Danny Csakai, Julia Doherty, Duncan Frazier, Kelsey Lessard, Nicholas MacDonald-Martell, Connor Mitchell, Jack Olson, Val Stearns and Dillon Warr.
SU returns to action on Friday, Jan. 22 when the team hosts Bloomsburg at 6 p.m.
