Box Score SELINSGROVE, Pa. – It took 10 extra minutes of playing time, but it was well worth the wait as the Susquehanna women's team basketball defeated visiting Catholic University 85-84 in double overtime.
With nine seconds on the clock and the game tied at 71, Nikki Komara drew an offensive foul by Michelle Desantis to give SU the ball by its basket. An inbounds play with 0.2 seconds did not result in a basket and forced overtime.
At the 4:04 mark in the first overtime period, Angie Schedler scored the first point as she went 1-2 at the free throw line to take a one-point advantage (72-71). However, the Cardinals answered with a free throw of their own to tie the game at 72 with 3:15 on the clock.
Catholic's Jayni Webster made a jumper to take a two point lead with three minutes remaining (74-72) but Adams tied it once again (74) with a jump shot seven seconds later. With 1:37 remaining in overtime Komara sinks a pair of free throws to take the lead (76-74) but 30 seconds later the game was tied again (76) on a Josephine Migash layup.
As Sofie Schedler made two free throws to take the lead (78-76) Walheim layup with 24 seconds on the clock tied the game at 78 to force a double overtime.
Two seconds into the second overtime, Sofie Schedler made a layup to give the Crusaders the two point lead (80-78). Both teams traded baskets and tied the game (83-83) for the 18th time of the night with 2:29 on the clock.
A free throw by Catholic's Melissa Migash gave the Cardinals the slight one point lead (84-83) at the 1:15 mark. However, with less than 30 seconds on the clock, Sofie Schedler made a layup to go up by one (85-84) and a block by Courtney Adams as the clock ran out sealed the Crusader 85-84 win.
Angie Schedler led all players with 26 points while Sofie Schedler followed with 21 to go along with six assists. Lexi Biggs-Garcia and Komara contributed 11 points each while Komara's 15 boards gave her a double-double on the night to complement her eight assists and Adams totaled 13 rebounds.
Susquehanna shot 40.8 percent from the field, 32.4 percent from behind the arc and 66.7 percent at the free throw line.
Catholic went ahead 7-2 with 3:05 left in the first quarter before the Crusaders went on an 11-4 run to take a two-point lead with 29 seconds on the clock. Catholic tied it at the seven-second mark with a layup from Michelle Desantis to end the first quarter tied at 13.
Tess Nichols's three 15 seconds into the second quarter gave the Crusaders a three-point lead (16-13) while a jumper by Biggs-Garcia with 7:25 remaining in the second half gave Susquehanna its biggest lead of the half at eight (23-15). The Cardinals went on a 13-5 run to knot the game at 28 with 1:45 on the clock.
A three by Angie Schedler followed by a layup from Sofie Schedler with 57 seconds remaining gave the Crusaders the points they needed to keep the lead as the clock ran out to go into halftime up 33-32.
Both teams' defenses held strong as neither team scored for the first two and half minutes until Komara made a layup to give Susquehanna a three point lead (36-32) at the 7:30 mark. A Wellheim trey tied the game once again (35-35) just 14 seconds later.
Catholic scored first in the final quarter to tie the game 50 all at the 9:52 mark. The Crusaders took the lead once again as Angie Schedler sank two free throws (52-50) at 9:36. Both teams proceeded to trade buckets until the 7:17 mark when Desantis made a layup to knot the game once again (56).
With 5:18 remaining in the game, Komara sunk a jumper to give SU a four point edge (62-58). The Cardinals answered to tie the game at 64 with 4:24 on the clock and again at 67 at the 2:38 mark. A three pointer by Angie Schedler gave SU a three point lead with 2:15 remaining in the game and a minute later the game was tied at 71.
The Crusaders return to action on Wednesday Feb. 3 when they host Landmark Conference rival Juniata for a 7:00 p.m. game.
