Crusader Men's Basketball Wins Lucky Number Thirteen

SCRANTON, Pa. – The No. 11 Susquehanna men's basketball team defeated No. 21 Scranton today on the road by a score of 78-63.

Susquehanna (13-0, 3-0) took an early 5-4 lead at the 17:48 mark on a Brandon Hedley three while another trey increased the Crusader lead to 10-6 with 15:03 left in the first half.

Scranton (10-2, 3-1) tied the game at 10 less than a minute later on a Marcus Thomas jumper. SU's Josh Miller gave the lead (12-10) to the Crusaders at the 12:40 mark when he made two free throws. However, the Royals proceeded to go on a 7-4 run to turn the tide in their favor, 17-14.

Susquehanna answered with a Ryan Traub layup followed by a Hedley three-pointer to tie the game once again at 19 with 9:07 left to play in the first half. The game would be tied twice more before the Royals took a quick lead at the 6:17 mark (26-24) but 26 seconds later the lead changed when Josh Miller sunk a three to put SU ahead 27-26. The Crusaders held the lead thought the remainder of the half to go into halftime up 36-33.

Scranton broke the third tie of the second half, after less than five minutes of play, with a John Vitkus layup to take a slim, 47-45, lead which would remain the score for the next two minutes.  Steven Weidlich gave the Crusaders the one-point advantage (48-47) at the 13:25 mark.

Susquehanna pulled away on a 5-2 run that was capped off on a Weidlich trey (53-49) with 10:18 remaining in the half. The Royals came within two (55-53) when Brian Farrell made a layup with 8:22 on the clock but it was the closest they came for the rest of the night as SU finished the game out-scoring Scranton 23-10 to take the 78-63 win.

Miller led all players with a game-high 24 points to go along with seven boards. Weidlich, Hedley and Danny Weiss all had double digit nights with 19, 15 and 12 points, respectively.

SU went 11-for-11 at the free throw line and shot 46.7 percent from the floor and 40.7 percent from behind the arc while Scranton shot 41.7 percent from the floor and went 6-25 (24 percent) behind the arch.

The Crusaders return home on Saturday, Jan. 9 when they host the United States Merchant Marine Academy at 2 pm.
