Box Score SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Susquehanna women's basketball team went into halftime trailing No. 7/8 Scranton by just four points but third quarter struggles for the SU offense allowed the Royals to pull away with a 65-51 victory.
The game was tied at 19 after the first quarter and the Crusaders (8-4, 1-3) were within just two of the lead (32-30) with 1:45 left in the half. The Royals (14,-0, 5-0) scored the final bucket of the half to take a slim, four-point edge into halftime.
Unfortunately, SU's offense put up just eight third-quarter points and as the period came to a close, Scranton led by 14 and never let the lead dip below 10.
Courtney Adams led Susquehanna with 13 points to go along with eight boards (five offensive). Nikki Komara fell one rebound shy of a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds. She also added four assists, two blocks and two steals. Sofie Schedler finished with 10 points.
SU shot 37.5 percent from the floor for the first half but shot only 23.5 percent in the second. The Crusaders were 6-for-6 at the free throw line. Scranton, meanwhile, shot 43 percent from the floor for the game.
Susquehanna took a 5-2 lead early in the game on a three from Komara and built a six-point lead (12-6) on a trey from Schedler. Lexi Biggs-Garcia made it a nine-point game (17-8) with a jumper at the 4:10 mark of the opening quarter.
Scranton, though, closed the period on an 11-2 run to tie the game at 19.
The game remained tied at 27 with 3:26 left in the half thanks to Nicole Gault's jumper. Gault then broke the tie with a three-pointer 35 seconds later for a 30-27 SU advantage.
Scranton's Bridgette Mann tied the game at 30 on a three-point play at the 2:10 mark and the Royals would go on to take a 34-30 lead into the locker room.
Scranton took its first double-digit lead of the game (42-32) on two Sarah Payonk free throws at the 6:11 mark and Susquehanna found itself down by 14 (52-38) by the time the quarter expired.
Angie Schedler's layup with 7:37 remaining in the game made it a 10-point contest (52-42) but the Crusaders pulled no closer over the remainder of the game.
Susquehanna remains at home to host USMMA on Saturday at 4 p.m.
