Volleyball Takes Two on Third Landmark Weekend

QUICK HIT: The Susquehanna volleyball team defeated the Catholic University of America and Goucher College in straight sets on Saturday. 

THE SCORES: SU defeated Catholic 25-19, 25-17 and 25-8 and Goucher 25-21, 25-18 and 25-17.

AGAINST CATHOLIC: Susquehanna led from start to finish in the first set against the Cardinals, taking a 10-point lead at 20-10 on a Leana Carvin kill. SU proceeded to out-score Catholic 15-9 to take the 25-19 win.

In the second set the game was tied five times before the River Hawks scored six unanswered points to go up 10 (21-11). The Cardinals managed six more points but it was not enough as SU won 25-17.

The River Hawks were down 4-3 in the third set before a kill from Morgan Lowe tied the game at four. From this point forward the River Hawks only allowed four more Cardinal points in route to a 25-8 win.

Lowe led SU in kills with nine while Marykate Sherkness contributed eight. Carvin, Erin Byrne and Tara Mahoney all finished the match with six kills each. Maggie O'Hearn tallied 32 assists while Caroline Beohm led the team in digs with 13.

AGAINST GOUCHER: The River Hawks were down 1-0 in the opening set before a Lowe kill tied the game at one. From this point, SU went on a 12-2 run to take a 10-point lead (13-3). The Gophers scored five unanswered points to come within three (24-21) but it was not enough as a Natalie Arm kill ended the set.

Goucher led at the beginning of the second set 4-2 before a kill from Sherkeness tied the game at six. The Gophers tied the set at 10 with an attacking error from SU's Arm but SU out-scored Goucher 15-8 for the remainder of the set to win 25-18.

SU took an early 10-5 lead in the third set on a Julie Kreutzer service ace but the Gophers responded with a five-point run to tie the game at 10. A kill by Janai Henderson gave the River Hawks an eight-point lead (22-14) but the Gophers scored three points in succession to come within five (22-17). However, it was not enough as SU won 25-18.

Arm and Mahoney led SU in kills with eight each while Kreutzer totaled 14 assists and Lindsey Pugh tallied 10 assists. Beohm contributed 13 digs.

WITH THESE WINS…The River Hawks have clinched the number two seed in the Landmark Conference tournament. Juniata College is the number one seed while Catholic is number three and the University of Scranton is the number four seed. Susquehanna will host No. 3 Catholic on Wednesday, November 2 for a Landmark Conference semifinal at 7:00 p.m. with the final to follow at the highest remaining seed on Saturday, November 5.

WHAT'S NEXT? The River Hawks return home to host Coast Guard and the Stevens Institute of Technology on Friday, October 21 at 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., respectively.
