Women's Basketball Use Late Surge to Defeat Gallaudet

WASHINGTON, D.C. – With her team facing a three-point deficit heading into the fourth quarter and down by as much as seven in the final period, senior Nikki Komara wasn't going to go quietly.

Komara scored 10 fourth-quarter points to lift the Susquehanna University women's basketball team to its fourth straight win, a 69-65 win over Gallaudet University Saturday afternoon at the Field House.

Komora hit the game-tying and go-ahead free throws with 2:40 remaining. After Gallaudet hit a 3-pointer, she hit the game-tying jump shot with 2:19 remaining and she even assisted on Janine Conway's go-ahead layup with 1:44 left. The River Hawks outscored the Bison 22-15 in the final period.  

Komara, the Landmark Conference leader in assists, finished with a team and season-high 17 points with a season and game-high eight assists. She also had three rebounds, a block and a steal. She made 7-of-9 shots from the field, including a 3-pointer. Junior Angie Schedler added 12 points, three rebounds and two assists while senior Lexi Biggs-Garcia had 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Junior Courtney Adams led a bench that scored 24 points with 11 points and five rebounds. Senior Nicole Gault had six rebounds and a season-high five blocks, giving her 18 on the season, the second most in the conference.

Susquehanna shot nearly 47 percent compared to Gallaudet's 39 percent. The River Hawks also outshot the Bison from the free throw line as Susquehanna made 12-of-17 (71 percent) to Gallaudet's 2-of-7 (29 percent). The Susquehanna bench outscored Gallaudet's 24-0. Susquehanna was outrebounded, 48-33 including a 21-5 Gallaudet advantage on the offensive glass. There were 11 lead changes and eight ties with no team leading by more than seven points.

Susquehanna (7-1) is off until Saturday, December 17 for finals week as it returns home to host Marywood University at 2 p.m.
