Women's Hoops Picks Up Critical Conference Win

Box Score

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – It was a game delayed several times by weather but it was well worth the wait for the Susquehanna women's basketball team and its fans as SU defeated Landmark Conference opponent Elizabethtown 72-54 at home.

The Blue Jays led the majority of the opening quarter but the Crusaders took a 20-19 lead three minutes into the second period and never looked back. The victory keeps SU in the hunt for a spot in the postseason.

Four players reached double figures for Susquehanna (15-7, 8-6), led by 16 from Sofie Schedler who also added eight boards and eight assists. Angie Schedler poured in 14 points while Courtney Adams had 12 to go along with six rebounds and Nicole Gault finished with 10 points and nine rebounds in 16 minutes of work.

Both teams struggled at the free throw line but SU shot 44 percent from the floor while holding Elizabethtown (14-7, 9-5) to a 27.4 percent effort from the floor and just 13.3 percent from beyond the arc.

Susquehanna trailed 7-0 after just over two minutes of play before the Crusaders countered with their own 7-0 run, knotting the game on Sofie Schedler's three at the 5:01 mark of the quarter.

Elizabethtown went back ahead on its next possession before Gault's layup with 1:48 on the clock tied it at 13. It remained tied at 15 before a Gault free throw at the 49-second mark put SU ahead 16-15 heading into the second quarter.

The Blue Jays briefly tied the game (19-19) early in the quarter but a Sofie Schedler free throw broke the tie and made it 20-19 in favor of SU and it was a lead the Crusaders would not relinquish.

They went up by double digits (30-20) on Gault's jumper with 4:53 remaining and took a 14-point lead, 41-27, into halftime thanks to Gault's free throw with just nine seconds left to play in the half.

With 2:12 to play in the third quarter, Angie Schedler's layup made it a 20-point game (54-34) and SU went into the final period of play with a 57-36 advantage.

Elizabethtown cut the lead to less than 20 at several points in the final quarter but Susquehanna did not let its lead dip below 16 points for the remainder of the game.

The Crusaders have a quick turnaround as they host Goucher on Wednesday, Feb. 17 at 7 p.m.
