Box Score MADISON, N.J. – The Susquehanna women's lacrosse team came up with just enough offense to hold off Drew in a 15-13 conference road win Friday afternoon, the first conference game of the season for both squads.
SU (3-3, 1-0) led 10-3 at the half and despite giving up 10 second-half goals to the Rangers (2-6, 0-1), the Crusaders held on for the win.
Senior Annie McElaney scored her 100th career goal in the game. She finished with a game-high six goals with her second of the afternoon marking the 100th of her career. McElaney also added two assists and classmate Becky McHugh chipped in four goals and two assists.
Goalie Alyssa Rothman got the start and played all 60 minutes with 12 saves. The SU defense forced 20 Rangers turnovers but Drew held a slim, 39-33 edge in shots.
Susquehanna opened the game by scoring four of the first five goals. The Crusaders scored the final three goals of that stretch over a seven-minute span to lead 4-1 midway through the half.
A 4-0 run of goals in less than four minutes upped SU's lead to six (8-2) with 8:48 remaining. Drew scored its third goal of the game at the 6:12 mark for an 8-3 game before Caroline Rabiecki and Brooke Burnett closed out the half with back-to-back goals for a 10-3 game at the half.
McElaney scored just 49 seconds into the second half for an eight-goal Susquehanna lead (11-3). The Rangers responded by scoring the next five goals to pull within three (11-8) at the 17:18 mark.
Shannon Kinney's goal with 13:19 remaining made it a 13-9 game but the Rangers scored four of the final six goals of the game. Drew's final goal at the 4:15 mark made it just a one-score game (14-13) but McElaney scored with 3:35 to play to give SU a two-goal cushion and eventually the win.
Susquehanna returns home to host Randolph-Macon on March 30 at 4 p.m.
