Baseball Takes Two from Catholic

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Susquehanna baseball team picked up its 16th victory of the spring with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Catholic University on Sunday afternoon.

SU's 12-6 game one win and 4-3 game two victory improved the team's conference record to 10-1 on the season and also extended Susquehanna's win streak to four games.

The Crusaders (17-9, 10-1) scored eight of their 12 runs over the final three innings of the game to pull away from Catholic in the series opener. SU pounded out 14 hits with leadoff hitter Justin Cassinelli going 2-for-3 with three runs scored while Josh Cimino picked up two hits, one RBI and two runs scored from the number spot in the lineup.

Zach Leone drove in five runs on two hits, both doubles, while Taylor Luckenbill picked up three RBI on two hits, including a solo homer.

Starting pitcher Matt Cassinelli went 2.2 innings and gave up all six of the Cardinals' runs. Cole Luzins came on in relief and pitched the final 4.1 innings, scattering just three hits to pick up his second win of the spring.

Catholic (11-15, 3-8) jumped out to a 3-0 first inning lead with Anthony Ferlise driving in the final two runs of the inning with a two-run double to center.

Luckenbill's RBI groundout in the bottom of the second plated Susquehanna's first run of the game and made it 3-1 heading into the third.

The Cardinals plated another three runs in their half of the third on RBI hits from three different batters.

Those marked the final runs of the game for Catholic. Susquehanna countered with a three-run third inning of its own with Leone's double to left scoring the first two runs. Leone later came around to score on a sac fly to trim Catholic's lead to two (6-4).

In the bottom of the fourth, Luckenbill drove in the inning's first run before Leone came up with a three-run double to right center that cleared the bases and made it 8-6 in favor of SU.

Luckenbill's solo shot in the fifth upped his team's lead to three (9-6) before RBI hits from Cimino, Matt Cassinelli and Dylan Jenkins made it a six-run game (12-6) after six innings of play.

Luzins retired the side in order in the top of the seventh to give the game one victory to Susquehanna.

Game two was much more of a pitchers' duel. Starter Cory Fallon went 5.2 innings and gave up just two runs on eight hits with three strikeouts. Reliever Liam Conboy tossed 1.1 innings of two-hit, one-run ball to pick up his fifth save of the season.

SU's bats had just six hits in the game but the Crusaders made them count. Leone and Luckenbill accounted for all six hits as they had three apiece with Leone also adding one RBI and Luckenbill scoring one run.

Susquehanna took a 1-0, second-inning lead when Bryan Palsi scored on Danny Gordon's groundout to first base.

Catholic got that run back, though, on Stefan Poggioli's single up the middle that scored Matt Hsiung.

SU then broke through for three runs in the fourth inning. Bases loaded walks by Justin Cassinelli and Cimino made it 3-1 and Leone's sac fly to left field made it a 4-1 ballgame.

Catholic was able to plate solo runs in the sixth and seventh innings. In the seventh, the Cardinals made it 4-3 on an unearned run with no outs but Conboy retired the final three batters in order with the last two coming via strikeout to leave the tying run stranded on third.

Susquehanna remains at home to host Wesley on April 14 at 4 p.m.
