Volleyball Wins Union Invitational; O'Hearn Breaks Record

THE QUICK STORY: The Susquehanna volleyball team won the Union Invitational after defeating Middlebury and Skidmore in straight sets Saturday. Senior Maggie O'Hearn broke the all-time assist record on her first assist in the second set against Skidmore.

RIVER HAWKS RECORD: Susquehanna now improves to 6-2 on the year.

AGAINST MIDDLEBURY: The River Hawks defeated Middlebury in three sets (25-23, 25-16, 25-20). SU hit for a .216 percentage while totaling 39 kills. Morgan Lowe led all players with 12 kills while Erin Byrne tallied nine and Marykate Sherkness contributed six. Alyssa Chiodo accounted for 13 digs and O'Hearn made 28 assists. O'Hearn and Hannah Lyons totaled five block assists each.

The River Hawks were down 6-9 in the first set before tying the set five times on the way to a 25-23 win. In the second set, SU trailed 3-0 before a kill by Sherkness started the scoring and the River Hawks never looked back, winning 25-16. With the third set tied at 10, when Caroline Beohm served an ace to take the lead, a lead that would not be relinquished for the remainder of the set as SU won 25-20.

AGAINST SKIDMORE: Susquehanna defeated Skidmore in three sets: 25-17, 25-14, and 25-21. Leading the River Hawks was Lowe with 12 kills and an impressive .417 attack percentage. Sherkness had nine kills and only one error for a hitting percentage of .421. O'Hearn made 30 of SU's 45 assists with Julie Kreutzer picking up eight. As a team, the River Hawks hit for a .350 attacking percentage while Skidmore hit .125.

RECORD BROKEN: Maggie O'Hearn broke the all-time assist record with her first assist of the second set against Skidmore. The previous record of 3,748 was set by Sophie Hall (2004-2007). O'Hearn has a career total of 3,766 assists.

ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM: Lowe and O'Hearn were named to the All-Tournament Team. 

WHAT'S NEXT? The River Hawks return home on Wednesday, September 14 for a 7:00 p.m. match against Franklin & Marshall.
