Men's Basketball Opens New Year With Another Victory

CARLISLE, Pa. - After building a 17-point lead with 12:55 remaining in the game, the No. 14 Susquehanna University men's basketball team held off a late rally from Dickinson College as the River Hawks prevailed with a 76-66 win Tuesday night at the Kline Center.

It was Susquehanna's first win of the New Year as it hasn't played a game in two weeks. It was also the 10th straight win for the River Hawks.

Despite falling behind 12-0 as Dickinson hit four straight 3-pointer to start the game, Susquehanna led by three at the half but it went on an 18-4 run over the first 7:05 of the second half to take the 17-point lead. The River Hawks led by double-digits until the 7:12 mark when Dickinson got within eight but Susquehanna countered with a quick 5-0 run. Susquehanna then led by nine with 1:43 remaining and the closest Dickinson got was six with 47 seconds remaining when Dickinson split a pair of free throws. Susquehanna ended the game on a 6-2 run thanks to a Ryan Traub three-point play and four straight free throws.

Five River Hawks scored in double-figures led by freshman Seth Callahan, who came off the bench to score a career-high 16 points with three rebounds and three assists. He made 4-of-5 shots from 3 and 5-of-6 overall. Sophomore Tyler Hoagland led the starters with 14 points, six rebounds and a team-high four assists.Traub and senior Steven Weidlich scored 12 points apiece while Traub, who scored all of his points in the second half, added three rebounds and Weidlich had four rebounds and three assists.

Senior Danny Weiss came off the bench to score 10 points while pulling down a team-high seven rebounds. The Susquehanna bench accounted for 30 points. Senior Jason Dietrich added six points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Susquehanna shot over 47 percent (29-61) from the field while hitting 9-of-14 from 3. The River Hawks forced 16 turnovers, turning those into 18 points and had 34 points in the paint.

Susquehanna hosts Lancaster Bible on Thursday, January 5 in a non-conference game. It's Susquehanna's first home game since Nov. 22.
