Strong Pitching Gives Baseball its First Win

Box Score

Freshman Bobby Grigas threw seven shutout innings striking out 12 and combined with Nathan Madden and Liam Conboy to lead the Susquehanna University Baseball team to a 4-0 victory over Christopher Newport Sunday afternoon at Captains Park in Newport News, Virginia as the River Hawks picked up win number one for the 2017 season.

Grigas allowed four hits and walked seven batter but was able to get out of trouble when needed. He recorded strikeouts for five of the first six outs of the game. He allowed a pair of runners in the third but recorded a strikeout to get out of a jam.

Susquehanna (1-2) scored its first run in the fourth with a sacrifice fly. A pair of walks to Cole Luzins and Danny Gordon started the inning. Taylor Luckenbill reached on a fielder's choice play and after Nick Berger singled to load the bases, Justin miller lifted a sacrifice fly to left field for the first run of the game.

Grigas pitched out of another jam in the fourth as Christopher Newport (6-6) put a pair of runners on base with one out. Grigas struck out the next batter and got a pop out to centerfield to end the inning.

The freshman hurler was in trouble again in the fifth. After striking out the first two batters of the frame, Grigas allowed a double and walked the next two batters to load the bases before getting another fly out to end the inning.

The River Hawks made it a 2-0 lead in the sixth inning with another sacrifice fly. Luzins doubled to start the inning and moved to third on a Gordon sacrifice bunt. Luckenbill hit a fly to right field that was deep enough to score Luzins from third for the 2-0 lead.

Susquehanna padded its lead in the eighth inning with a pair of two-out runs. Gordon started the rally with a two-out double. Luckenbill singled through the right side to score Gordon. Berger followed with a double into the right field corner to score Luckenbill but was thrown out at third trying to stretch the double into a triple.

Madden worked a near perfect eighth allowing just one runner on a two-out walk and Conboy finished the game recording a pair of strikeouts.

Berger was 3-for-4 with a run batted in to lead the offense while Luzins, Gordon, Luckenbill, Dylan Jenkins and Cory Fallon each had a hit for the River Hawks. Luckenbill had a pair of RBI and Gordon scored twice to lead Susquehanna.

The River Hawks return to action Saturday, March 4 with a doubleheader at Roanoke College with game one slated to start at Noon.
