Softball Salvages a Split with an Extra Innings Win

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Jackie Gore doubled home the tying run and then came around to score the game winner two batters later as the Susquehanna University Softball team salvaged a split of a doubleheader with Lycoming College with a 2-1 win in eight innings in the second game of the twin bill. The Warriors took a 2-0 decision of the opener at Sassafras Field in Selinsgrove.

Susquehanna (19-7) played to a scoreless tie with Lycoming (19-7) through the first seven innings of regulation before moving to extra innings and the international tie breaker rule.

Lycoming scored a run in the top of the eighth inning with a sacrifice bunt and a double. With two runners on base, Alexa Gonzalez was able to get an infield pop out to end the inning.

In the bottom half of the inning, Kelly Miller converted a sacrifice bunt to move Heather Pearson to third. Gore followed with a double to left centerfield to score Pearson for the tying run.

With two outs, Amanda Seckinger was inserted as a pinch hitter and reached base on a fielding error which also allowed Gore to come around and score the game-winning run for the 2-1 Susquehanna victory.

Emilie Boman led the River Hawks with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate while Gore and Kasey Bost had one hit each. Gonzalez allowed four hits and one run with four strikeouts to pick up her 10th win of the season.

In game one, Boman, Miller, Pearson and Lauren Creamer all had hits but the River Hawks were unable to score as Lycoming posted a 2-0 win.

The Warriors scored once in the third with a pair of singles and a sacrifice bunt. They added a second run in the seventh inning as a result of a two-out walk, single and run-scoring double.

Senior Jamie Fesinstine pitched well in the loss allowing six hits and two runs with six strike outs.

The River Hawks return to Landmark Conference play Saturday with a trip to Juniata for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
