A day after Bobby Grigas set the school record for strikeouts in a game for the Susquehanna University Baseball team, Nathan Madden and Tyson Thrush combined to shut down Juniata with a pair of 4-1 wins in seven-inning games as the River Hawks completed the three-game sweep of the Landmark Conference series with the Eagles Saturday afternoon on Harold Bolinger Field in Selinsgrove.

Madden fanned 11 batters with a complete-game victory in the opener and Thrush went 6 1/3 innings with seven strike outs for the win in the night cap for Susquehanna (17-12 Overall, 9-3 Landmark).

The strong pitching was backed up with some timely hitting as the River Hawks had a pair of home runs with one in each game and a three-run fourth inning in the second game of the doubleheader.

In the opener, Juniata (5-25, 0-9) scored a run in the top of the first but the lead did not last long as Susquehanna answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning. Cory Fallon hit a bases loaded single to right field scoring two runs to give the River Hawks the lead.

That was all the lead that Madden needed as he settled down and allowed just one single the rest of the game.

The River Hawks added to the lead in the third inning when Cole Luzins hit a one-out home run and Luzins scored the last run of the game in the sixth when he singled, stole second, took third on a passed ball and scored when the Juniata defense converted a 6-4-3 double play.

Luzins was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a run batted in. Fallon was 1-for-2 with a walk and two RBI.

In the second game of the day, Taylor Luckenbill connected on a one-out home run to right centerfield in the bottom of the first to open the scoring. The River Hawks scored three times in the fourth to go ahead 4-0.

Luzins singled and stole second base with one out and Fallon walked to put runners on first and second. Ben Burman singled to score one run and Nick Berger doubled to score Burman and Fallon.

The Eagles added their lone run of the game in the fifth inning.

Thrush scattered six hits and walked three while striking out seven batters over 6 1/3 innings for the win. Jack Kinney earned the save as he retired the final two batters of the game with a strike out and a ground out.

Berger led the offense with a 2-for-2 effort while Burman and Luckenbill had a hit and a run batted in each.

The River Hawks will travel to Messiah for a single game Tuesday and return home for a Landmark Conference three-game series Saturday and Sunday with Elizabethtown.
