Men's Lacrosse Drops Nail Biter on Senior Day

Box Score

Sophomore Jack Donnelly and freshman Preston Ouellette scored two goals each as the Susquehanna University Men's Lacrosse team built three goals leads at 4-1 and 5-2 but Scranton University battled back and posted a 7-6 victory Saturday afternoon in a Landmark Conference game on Sassafras Field in Selinsgrove.

Susquehanna (9-6 Overall, 1-4 Landmark) celebrated senior day prior to the start of the game honoring seniors Patrick Delp, Stephen Fickett, Kai Benson, Andrew Keller, James Harabedian and Chet McLaughlin.

The River Hawks used the momentum from the senior day celebration to take a 2-1 lead after the first quarter with goals by Alec Tzaneteas and Ouellette. The Ouellette goal came with just 0.2 seconds left on the clock in the first quarter.

Ouellette and Donnelly scored in the second quarter to give the River Hawks a 4-1 lead. The teams traded goals later in the period and Scranton (7-6, 3-3) added a goal with just two seconds left in the first half and Susquehanna took a 5-3 lead into the break.

Scranton scored the only goal of the third quarter to trim the lead to 5-4 and the Royals tied the score one minute into the final quarter.

Andrew Porzio gave the lead back to Susquehanna with his goal at the 10:56 mark of the period but Scranton scored twice in a span of 1:05 midway through the fourth quarter to take the 7-6 lead.

Scranton slowed the pace of the game working the ball around the offensive zone for most of the remainder of the game and held on for the one-goal win.

The regular-season win for Scranton was the first in four years over Susquehanna.

Jake Smolokoff led the River Hawks with three points on three assists while Donnelly, Ouellette and Porzio all had two points each.

Dylan Abplanalp made 13 saves in the Susquehanna goal.

The River Hawks will close out the 2017 season next Saturday at Drew with a 2:45 start.
