Softball Drops a Pair of Close Games with Moravian

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Susquehanna University Softball team dropped a heartbreaking 1-0 decision to Moravian in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon and then dropped a second tight decision with a 4-2 loss in the second game of the Landmark Conference twin bill on Sassafras Field in Selinsgrove.

Susquehanna (12-8 Overall, 2-2 Landmark) pitcher Jamie Fesinstine scattered seven hits and pitched out of a couple early jams before surrendering the winning run on a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh inning. Moravian (20-8, 6-0) had a one-out triple in the seventh before a sacrifice fly allowed the runner to score from third for the only run of the game.

Heather Pearson had both Susquehanna hits with singles in the first and seventh innings. Pearson singles to start the seventh frame and moved into scoring position with a one-out walk issued to Kelly Miller. The runners were stranded on base after two infield outs ended the game.

In the second game, the Greyhounds scored a run in the first to take the early lead and extended the lead with two more runs in the fourth inning.

In the bottom of the fourth, the River Hawks rallied to score one run to trim the lead to 3-1. Emilie Boman singled up the middle to start the inning and Lauren Creamer hit a sacrifice bunt to move Boman into scoring position. Brooke Kohler singled and took second on a throwing error by the Moravian pitcher that allowed Boman to score the first run of the game for Susquehanna.

Moravian answered with a single run in the top of the fifth to regain the three-run advantage and Susquehanna scored in the sixth to get back within two.

In the sixth, Boman started the rally again with a single to lead off the inning. Kohler was hit by pitch with one out to put runners on first and second. Miller followed with a single up the middle to score Boman from second and cut the Moravian lead in half at 4-2. After a pitching change, the Greyhounds recorded consecutive strike outs to end the inning.

Boman was 2-for-4 and Miller was 2-for-3 in game two.

Susquehanna hits the road for a Sunday doubleheader at Scranton and will play a non-conference doubleheader at Franklin and Marshall Tuesday before returning home Friday to face Lycoming.
