Softball Snaps Skid with Sweep of Scranton

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Leigh Ann Greenwald hit a home run in the opener and added two hits including a double in the night cap to lead the Susquehanna University Softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Scranton Sunday afternoon in a Landmark Conference matchup in Scranton.

Susquehanna (14-8, 4-2) won the opener 3-1 and then held on for a 6-5 win in game two as Scranton (8-9, 2-4) had a late rally fall short.

In the first game, the River Hawks manufactured a run in the first inning as Brooke Kohler reached base on an error and came around to score on a Jackie Gore single as Susquehanna jumped out to an early 1-0 lead.

In the third inning, Greenwald homered to right centerfield to extend the lead to 2-0.

Scranton cut the lead in half with a run in the fourth but the River Hawks tacked on an insurance run in the seventh as Emilie Boman doubled home Emily Lear who was inserted as a pinch runner for Kohler after her two-out single started the run-scoring rally.

Boman was 3-for-4 and Greenwald was 2-for-4 to lead the offense while Jamie Fesinstine allowed a run and struck out three to earn the pitching victory.

In game two, each team scored a run in the second inning but Susquehanna broke the early tie with a pair of runs each in the third and fourth innings to go up 5-1. A two-run inning for Scranton in the fifth trimmed the lead but Susquehanna added a key run in the seventh before holding off a late Royal rally as

Scranton scored twice in the bottom of the inning before Fesinstine came on to close out the victory.

Greenwald, Boman, Gore and Kelly Miller all had two hits each for Susquehanna with Greenwald and Miller each hitting doubles.

Susquehanna have a pair of non-conference doubleheaders scheduled against Franklin and Marshall and Lycoming this week before playing a Landmark doubleheader Saturday at Juniata.
