Box Score Hunter Pitman scored her second goal of the day just 1:11 into overtime against Wilkes University to give the Susquehanna University Field Hockey team its first win of the 2017 season and advance the River Hawks to the championship game of the of the Connie Harnum Classic on Sassafras Field in Selinsgrove.
Susquehanna (1-0) will play Kean University (1-0), who defeated Ithaca College 3-0, tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. in the championship game while the Bombers (0-1) face Wilkes University (0-1) in the consolation game at 12 p.m.
The River Hawks took the lead early with Vivian Simone and Heather Casey scoring midway through the first half. Wilkes was able to come back with scores by Zoe Stepanski and Keighlyn Oliver late in the first half and the teams went into the break with a 2-2 tie.
In the second half, Pitman scored early off a pass from Casey giving the River Hawks the 3-2 edge for much of the second half. Wilkes tied up the game with about 10 minutes left and held one as Susquehanna threatened late in regulation sending the game into overtime.
The River Hawks dominated the short overtime play with Casey giving a pass in the circle to Pitman who knock in the winning goal to end the game.
It was an offensive game for both sides, Susquehanna recorded 14 shots and eight penalty corners while Wilkes recorded 13 shots and seven penalty corners.
The River Hawks are back in action tomorrow for the final day of the Connie Harnum Classic against the Cougars of Kean University at 2:30 p.m.
