Men's Soccer Falls on Overtime Penalty Kick

Box Score

A penalty kick awarded to Goucher College in the first overtime period Saturday night was the difference in a 3-2 loss for the Susquehanna University Men's Soccer team on a Landmark Conference game on Sassafras Field in Selinsgrove.

Goucher (6-3-2 overall, 1-0-1 Landmark) was awarded the penalty shot after a foul was call on Susquehanna (2-6-2, 0-1-1) keeper Matt Ellingworth as he came off his line to defend an unmarked player that had beaten the River Hawks defense with a break away opportunity in the box.

Ellingworth was issued a red card on the play and sent off the field and reserve keeper Ben King was inserted into the game to defend the penalty kick. The shot was to the right side of the goal and gave Goucher the 3-2 win.

Alex Graul gave Susquehanna an early lead as he scored with an assist from Ryan Cronin in the 15th minute. The score remained 1-0 in favor of the River Hawks for the remainder of the first half.

In the second half, Goucher tied the score in the 58th minute.

Chris Naiman scored for the second time this week with under 10 minutes to play to give the River Hawks another one-goal advantage.

Goucher answered 1:12 later with its second equalizer of the game and forced to overtime period.

The River Hawks held a 10-5 shots advantage in the first half but Goucher held a 9-6 edge in the second 45 minutes. Ellingworth finished with three saves for Susquehanna.

The River Hawks return to action Wednesday night with a 7 p.m. Landmark Conference game at home against Juniata.
