Scranton Pulls Away with Second Half Run

Box Score

Ryan Traub and Tyler Hoagland each scored 10 points and the Susquehanna University Men's Basketball team trailed by just four points at halftime but Scranton University used a key 12-3 run in the middle of the second half to open up a lead and held on for a 84-73 win Wednesday night in a Landmark Conference game at the John Long Center in Scranton.

Susquehanna (4-9 overall, 1-2 Landmark) used 12 players with 11 playing at least 10 minutes each in the game and had balanced scoring with seven players scoring at least six points each. Scranton (6-8, 2-1) used just eight players and had five of them score in double-digits.

The teams played a close first have with neither team holding a lead of more than three points for the first 10 minutes of action. Scranton took its biggest lead of the period with five minutes remaining as the Royals went up by seven points at 32-25.

A Glen Nanius basket followed by a Seth Callahan 3-pointer trimmed the lead down to a basket two minutes later and the teams traded baskets for the remainder of the first period.

In the second half, Scranton used an early 8-1 run to take a 10-point lead at 49-39 but the River Hawks battled back as Adam Dizbon and Traub made back-to-back baskets.

A Hoagland bucket made it a five-point game at 50-45 and later, a pair of Nanius free throws made it a 57-51 Scranton lead with 11:14 remaining.

The Royals then scored 12 of the next 15 points to open up a 15-point lead at 71-56 with six minutes to play and Scranton held the lead down the stretch to secure the win.

Hoagland and Traub led the team with 10 points each. Callahan had nine points and Nanius finished with eight. Traub led the squad with seven rebounds and Hoagland handed out eight assists. Zachary Knecht finished with six points, six rebounds and a pair of blocked shots.

Susquehanna returns to action Saturday at Elizabethtown.
