Box Score Bailey Trell had a team-leading 17 points and eight rebounds for the Susquehanna University Women's Basketball team and a solid defensive effort in the second half helped the River Hawks come back from a double-digit deficit to defeat Drew University 50-47 Saturday afternoon in a Landmark Conference game on O.W. Houts Gymnasium in Selinsgrove.
After a back-and-forth first quarter, Drew (11-6 Overall, 3-3 Landmark) rallied in the second quarter to build a lead of 12 points at one point in the period and ended up leading by eight at 29-21 at the halftime intermission.
The River Hawks (7-9, 2-4) trimmed three points off the lead in the third quarter but still trailed by five at 38-33 after 30 minutes of play.
A jumper by Trell early in the fourth quarter cut the lead to two and after a Drew 3-pointer, Courtney Adams made consecutive baskets to get the River Hawks within a point at 42-41 with six minutes left.
After Drew missed a 3-pointer as time was running out on the shot clock, Trell answered with a driving layup to give Susquehanna a lead for the first time since the first quarter at 43-42.
The Rangers regained the lead with five straight free throws before Nevin Hoenninger buried a 3-pointer from the top of the key cutting the lead back down to a point.
The Susquehanna defense forced a turnover as Erin McQuillen made the steal and was fouled. The freshman made both free throws to give the River Hawks the lead for good at 48-47.
Trell iced the game with two free throws with 20 seconds left and Drew missed a pair of 3-point shots in the closing seconds for the final margin of victory.
Trell finished with 17 points, eight rebounds, two assists and three steals. Adams added 10 points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots.
Susquehanna will play at Catholic at 7 p.m. Wednesday before returning home for a stretch of three of four games at home beginning with Moravian on Saturday.
