Box Score Courtney Adams scored 12 of her team-leading 17 points in the first half and freshman Erin McQuillen scored 13 points and played every minute for the Susquehanna University Women's Basketball team Saturday afternoon as the River Hawks upended Moravian College in a key Landmark Conference game in O.W. Houts Gymnasium in Selinsgrove.
Adams was 6-for-12 in the first half and also grabbed five rebounds as Susquehanna (8-10 Overall, 3-5 Landmark) stayed in the hunt for a Landmark Conference playoff spot with the key home victory over the Greyhounds (13-6, 3-5). The River Hawks are tied with Moravian in sixth place in the latest standings and just one game out of fourth place.
Susquehanna took a slight 11-9 lead in the first quarter as McQuillen hit a late jumper to give the River Hawks a lead.
In the second quarter, Adams scored a pair of early baskets to extend the lead and then later in the quarter, Adams hit another jumper that sparked a 10-2 run that gave Susquehanna a 27-15 lead at halftime.
The teams traded baskets early in the second half but a 3-pointer by McQuillen with 2:26 left in the third quarter gave the River Hawks a 12-point edge. After Scranton rallied late to close the gap to six at 39-33 at the end of the third quarter, Megan McFadden extended the lead with the first basket of the fourth quarter.
Maddie Murray hit a layup with 2:15 left to play to extend the lead to 10 points at 51-41 and the River Hawks were a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line in the closing minutes to seal the victory.
Adams led the team with 17 points while McQuillen added 13 and McFadden chipped in 10 points and a team-best 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the year. Adams also had a team-leading four assists and three blocks. Nevin Hoenninger, Tess Nichols and Murray all had seven points each and Hoenninger led the team with four steals.
Susquehanna returns to action Wednesday night for a 7 p.m. Landmark Conference game against Juniata at home.
