Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Volleyball Outlasted by Two Nationally Ranked Powers

Brooke Lacesa led the team with 11 kills while Hannah Lyons and Riley O'Dowd each had ten kills but the Susquehanna University Women's Volleyball team was unable to recover after falling behind early to No. 1 Calvin College and dropped a competitive affair with No. 7 Thomas More Friday afternoon in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

The River Hawks (17-9) fell in three sets to Calvin (17-0) 7-25, 11-25, 13-25 and also lost in three sets to Thomas More (18-1) 21-25, 18-25, 13-25.

Calvin College is ranked No. 1 in the nation in the latest NCAA Division III rankings. Thomas More is ranked seventh.

The River Hawks were able to keep the score tied at four in the first set against Calvin, but an 11-0 Knights run cut off momentum and the team fell in the first set.

The team scored the first two points of the second set on a kill by Lyons and a double block by Lyons and Portale, but Calvin continued its strong play and won the set.

The team improved over the last set, at one point scoring five of seven points played but fell 25-13.

Against Thomas More, the River Hawks played tight with the Saints in a close first set that featured six lead changes. Lyons, O'Dowd, Portale and Lacesa all recorded kills in the set.

The Saints had a strong second set and were able to put away the River Hawks in the third set.

Gabby Davis handed out 18 assists in the second game.

The River Hawks continue play tomorrow when the team takes on No. 19 Ohio Northern and No. 17 Hope. Game one is set to begin at 11 a.m. in Grand Rapids.
