Riley O'Dowd,
Sydney Portale, and
Kody Dillon combined for over half of the team's kills and
Lindsey Pugh handed out 23 assists, but the Susquehanna University Volleyball team fell to Stevenson University in three tightly contested sets Wednesday evening at Owings Mills Gymnasium in Stevenson, Maryland.
The River Hawks (18-11) led early on in the first set 12-10, but saw the advantage dissipate after the Mustangs (16-11) scored four straight points to take a 14-12 lead.
The team regained a 17-15 lead after kills by
Veronica Kirchner, Dillon and Portale, but Stevenson scored ten of the final 14 points in the set to edge the River Hawks 25-21.
In the second set, Stevenson was able take a commanding 9-3 lead before Susquehanna made an extended run and was able to tie the set at 13.
The rest of the set went back and forth, with neither team leading by more than a point until Stevenson took a 23-21 lead late in the set. The River Hawks narrowed the deficit to one point at 24-23, but the Mustangs capitalized on an attack error to take the second set.
In the third set, the River Hawks led by three on three different occasions, but a run by Stevenson over the middle portion of the set carried the Mustangs to victory.
Susquehanna dropped the match 21-25, 23-25, 20-25.
The River Hawks continue play Friday when the team takes on Franklin & Marshall at 7 p.m. at O.W. Houts Gymnasium.
