Volleyball Sweeps Two Landmark Conference Games

Kody Dillon lead the team with 22 kills on the day as Sydney Portale and Hannah Lyons added 11 kills apiece and Lindsey Pugh handed out 58 assists as the Susquehanna University Volleyball team defeated Landmark Conference opponents Goucher and Elizabethtown in straight sets Saturday afternoon in Bethlehem.

The River Hawks (23-12 Overall, 5-1 Landmark) upended Goucher (13-15, 0-5) 25-18, 25-17, 25-19 in the first game before defeating Elizabethtown (19-16, 2-4) 25-19, 25-21, 25-19 in game two.

Against Goucher, the team was able to get off to a hot start. Leading 6-4, the River Hawks scored 9 of the next ten points to extend the lead to 15-5. The run was highlighted by three kills by Lyons and two from Dillon.

After another small run brought the lead to 20-7, the Gophers made a run of their own and brought the score to 23-18 before Susquehanna scored the final two points in the set.

Goucher started the second set with a strong run, taking a 10-5 lead before Susquehanna settled down and scored an incredible twelve points in a row to retake control. The run was highlighted by Lyons and several attack errors by the Gophers and the team took the second set 25-17.

The third set was a back and forth affair, with the River Hawks consistently holding a slight edge before gradually extending the lead over the final points of the set. Kills by Dillon and Paige Sfiroudis highlighted a run in which Susquehanna extended the lead from three to eight and took game one in three sets.

In game two against Elizabethtown, the Blue Jays were able to hang in with the River Hawks and take a 15-12 lead before falling victim to another Susquehanna run.

Kills by Lyons and a key block by Riley O'Dowd and Lyons were key over the stretch of solid play. Dillon capped off a first set victory with the closing kill.

The River Hawks stepped up when it counted in the second set, after another back and forth set had the score tied as late as 21 apiece. Dillon was able to record two more kills in a four point run and helped Susquehanna take the second set, 25-21.

The final set of the afternoon saw the River Hawks coast to victory after a strong start. Leading 14-4, the team saw its lead cut down to five in the later stages of the set, but Janai Henderson recorded the final kill of the day and Susquehanna completed a successful Landmark Conference sweep.

Caroline Boehm had 34 digs on the afternoon and Lizzie Herestofa added 21. O'Dowd tallied six blocks on the afternoon.

The River Hawks finish the regular season with a 23-12 record and have a 5-1 record in the Landmark Conference.
