Football Downs McDaniel in Stellar Defensive Effort

Connor Thompson made ten tackles and added an interception while Aaron Speight, Nick Brotzman and Frank DePaola each scored a touchdown as the Susquehanna University Football team shut down the McDaniel offense in a 20-3 victory over the Green Terror Saturday afternoon in Westminster, Maryland.

After a three and out by each side, the River Hawks (6-3 Overall, 5-3 Centennial) struck first on a drive that was orchestrated by Brotzman and capped off by Speight.

Starting at around mid-field, Brotzman completed passes to Kyle Good, Mikah Christian and Mitch Carsley to get to the McDaniel six-yard line before Speight punched in a rushing touchdown to give the River Hawks an early 7-0 advantage.

The remainder of the quarter would go on without either side scoring, as the River Hawk defense continued to make plays.

Connor Thompson, Craig Roumes and David Simpson all made tackles for losses in the quarter, holding McDaniel to 40 total yards in the opening 15 minutes.

The Green Terror did tally a field goal in beginning of the second quarter, but the River Hawks offense took care of business from there to extend the lead before halftime.

At the 7:34 mark in the second quarter, Susquehanna started what would be a nine play, 69 yard drive to take control of the game.

Torey Brown began the drive with four consecutive carries, gaining 17 yards in the process. After an incomplete pass on third down, Connor Thompson went on the offensive side of the ball and carried it 22 yards on a huge 4th down conversion.

Brotzman capped off the drive with a 10-yard touchdown pass to DePaola to extend the lead to 14-3.

McDaniel responded with a lengthy drive of its own, but a Thompson interception with 13 seconds left in the half negated any scoring threat the Green Terror had.

The third quarter started similarly to how the second quarter ended, with a lengthy drive by the Green Terror and a key defensive play by Thompson to prevent them from scoring.

With a 4th down and three yards to go, McDaniel dropped back to pass but Thompson made a huge sack to cause a turnover on downs.

The third quarter continued without a score by either side, while the defense shined. Kasheif Hyatt, Jason Brougham and Cole Dixon go in on the action, all making tackles in the period.

The River Hawks scored once more in the 4th quarter without relinquishing any points to cement the victory.

After Ricky Reyes intercepted a deep ball thrown by McDaniel, Brotzman and Carsley linked up on a 58 yard pass to plant themselves deep in McDaniel territory.

Four consecutive Speight runs followed by a two-yard touchdown run by Brotzman capped off the drive as Susquehanna took a 20-3 lead.

The defense sandwiched two impressive stops around a long offensive drive that saw over five minutes tick off the clock and the team walked away with a 20-3 victory.

Thompson led the team with ten tackles, followed by Dixon with seven and Danial Shelton with six. Speight had 72 rushing yards on the day and Carsley had 7 receptions for 105 yards.

The River Hawks continue their season Saturday when the team takes on Juniata on Senior Day at Amos Alonzo Stagg Field. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
