Kody Dillon and
Hannah Lyons recorded six and five kills respectively while
Lizzie Herestofa added nine digs, but it wasn't enough for the Susquehanna University Volleyball team as the River Hawks fell in in three sets to No. 6 Juniata in the Landmark Conference Finals Saturday evening at Memorial Gymnasium in Huntingdon.
Â
The River Hawks (24-13) fell to the Eagles (24-3) 14-25, 18-25, and 16-25. This is the eighth time in 10 years that the Susquehanna volleyball team has competed in the Landmark Conference championship match.
Â
In the opening set Susquehanna fell behind quickly, trailing 0-7 immediately out of the gate and proceeded to use a timeout to regroup. Coming out of the timeout,
Veronica Kirchner got the River Hawks on the scoreboard recording a kill. The closest that Susquehanna would get to Juniata was when they trimmed the margin to 15-7, as a Lyons kill led the team on a mini three-point run.
Caroline Beohm added a service ace but it wasn't enough and the team fell 25-14.
Â
In the following set, Susquehanna jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead with the help of two service aces by Dillon and
Lindsey Pugh. However, the Eagles went on two three-point runs that brought them right back into the set. The first run trimmed the River Hawks lead to one at 6-5 and the second one tied the set up at 10-10. The game was tied multiple times and it was tied as late as 14-14, but Juniata went on to take seven of the next eight points giving them a 21-15 lead. The River Hawks ended up dropping the set 25-18 as Dillon and Lyons tied for the team lead in kills with three in the set.
Â
The Eagles started the third set on a roll, leading 12-3 early on. The score remained in favor of the Eagles but Susquehanna made a late push and was able to score four straight points towards the end of the set to bring the score to 23-16. Juniata then took the next two points taking the set and the Landmark Conference Championship.
Â
Lindsey Pugh had 13 assists while
