Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women’s Soccer Wins Landmark Conference Championship on Penalty Kicks

Marley Clendenin scored the game-tying goal in the 87th minute and Madison Welliver made six saves while the River Hawks made all five penalty kicks in the penalty shootout as the Susquehanna University Women's Soccer team won the Landmark Conference Championship Saturday afternoon in Scranton.

The River Hawks (13-3-3) fired the first shot of the afternoon, as Brianna Caporuscio tried to put the team on the board first, but Scranton's goalkeeper was able to make the save and preserve a 0-0 tie.

Madison Welliver made a great save in the 12th minute of action on a shot by Scranton's Jamie Hreniak, but the rebound was put into the back of the net by Steph Lowery and the Royals (15-1-3) jumped out to an early lead.

With both teams having strong defenses throughout the season, the 1-0 lead seemed like an uphill climb for the River Hawks, especially considering the Royals had only given up six goals all season prior to the match.

Susquehanna registered two shots over the remaining 33 minutes of the half as Anna Werner had her offering saved and Emily Sullivan missed the target high and the score remained 1-0 at the half.

The story remained the same in the second half, with shot attempts from either side at a premium. Scranton did take a shot in the 70th minute, but Welliver made an important save to keep the deficit at one goal.

Clendenin, a center defender, pushed forward in the closing minutes and registered a shot in the 83rd minute that went wide.

Just a few minutes later, Clendenin was given another goal-scoring opportunity and she took full advantage.

On a feed from Sullivan in the 87th minute, Clendenin fired a shot from 21 yards out and scored to even the contest up a one goal apiece and give the River Hawks new life.

The defense held Scranton in check over the remainder of the second half and the game went into overtime.

The Royals held the shooting advantage in both overtime periods, but were unable to score. Julia Hutsko registered a shot in the first overtime that went just high and Welliver had to make one save in the second overtime to send the game into penalty kicks.

Although the game was deemed a tie after there was no separation over 110 minutes of play, the Landmark Championship remained in the balance and the River Hawk penalty kickers were up to the task.

Werner, Olivia Parke, Sullivan, Kate Cantrell and Clendenin each made their penalty kicks while the fourth kicker on Scranton hit the crossbar and Susquehanna came out on top (five to four in the shootout).

Sullivan, Hutsko and Clendenin led the team with two shots apiece.

Clendenin won the Most Valuable Player Award after scoring the game-tying goal and sealing the championship with a penalty kick.

The River Hawks now enter the NCAA tournament as an automatic selection. The team's first round opponent and game time have yet to be determined.
