Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Comfort’s Hot Shooting Not Enough for Women’s Basketball in Loss to Juniata

Sadie Comfort made five-of-six three point attempts on her way to a career high 17 points in just 17 minutes of action, but the Susquehanna University Women's Basketball team fell behind early and were never quite able to get over the hump in a 66-58 loss to Juniata College in their Landmark Conference opener at O.W. Houts Gymnasium in Selinsgrove.

Despite an early bucket by Erin McQuillen, the Eagles (3-4 Overall, 1-0 Landmark) scored eight of the first ten points in the game to take an 8-2 lead.

The River Hawks (3-2, 0-1) were able to cut into the deficit with baskets by Bailey Trell, Nevin Hoenninger and Alanna Connolly, but the Eagles were able to separate themselves over the final minutes of the quarter to take an 18-9 advantege.

The remainder of the contest saw the River Hawks continuously chip away at the Juniata lead, as the game turned physical and rebounding became crucial.

Comfort hit three of her three-pointers in the second quarter and Rachel Sweger added a made basket from deep as well, but the Eagles maintained their edge at 36-27 at the half.

The third quarter saw several different River Hawks get on the board, as Madi Welliver, Amanda Lemire, Connolly and McQullen all scored. Comfort added another made three-pointer as the team continued to try and make a comeback.

Trailing 48-43 heading into the fourth quarter, the River Hawks narrowed the gap to within three points on two occasions, but could not tie or take the lead. A 9-2 run by the Eagles from the 4:09 mark in the fourth quarter to the 1:33 mark cemented the win as Juniata took this one, 66-58.

McQuillen was the second player in double digits for Susquehanna with 13 points while Lemire added seven points and three assists. Welliver also had six points and seven rebounds as she helped control the paint against one of the tallest teams in the Landmark Conference.

The River Hawks continue their season Wednesday when they take on Neumann at O.W. Houts Gymnasium. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
