Men’s Basketball Uses Overtime to Take Down Juniata in Landmark Conference Opener

Zach Knecht posted his second straight double-double while Jaden Martin and Dominic Dunn each scored in double figures and hit crucial free throws down the stretch as the Susquehanna University Men's Basketball team used overtime to defeat Juniata 72-64 in its Landmark Conference Opener Saturday afternoon at O.W. Houts Gymnasium in Selinsgrove.

The River Hawks (3-3 Overall, 1-0 Landmark) struggled to score early on, falling behind 14-5 in the first eight minutes of action.

Back-to-back three-pointers by Dunn cut deeply into Juniata's (2-4, 0-1) lead before the team's went traded baskets in the middle stages of the first half.

Two buckets by Martin and a layup by Knecht finally tied up the score and the River Hawks camped down defensively for the rest of the half, as the team went on an 11-2 run to close out the first period with Matt LaCorte and Seth Callahan each hitting three-pointers.

The Eagles made a run to start the second half, eventually knotting the score up at 35 before baskets by Bryce Butler and Tyler Hoagland gave the River Hawks some breathing room.

Susquehanna maintained the lead in the second half, but were never able to put the game out of reach and Juniata made a run at the end of the game tie the game at 57 with 30 seconds left.

A turnover by the River Hawks led to a chance to win by the Eagles, but Dunn blocked a three-point attempt and the game went to overtime.

In the extra session, Knecht set the tone with a conventional three-point play, and the team was off and running.

Three straight points by Callahan widened the lead and Juniata was forced to foul in the closing minutes of action. Martin and Dunn capitalized on their opportunities at the line, going 9-10 combined to cement the 72-64 victory.

Rebounding was key in the overtime period, as Susquehanna outrebounded Juniata 10-2 to run away with the win. All eight players to check into the game scored and all but one recorded an assist.

The River Hawks look to build on this win Saturday when the team takes on Vassar College at O.W. Houts Gymnasium. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
