Men's Basketball Falls on Last Second Jumper to Scranton

Box Score

Tyler Hoagland scored six of his 18 points on driving lay ups in the final minute of the game and gave the Susquehanna University Men's Basketball team an 82-81 lead on his third layup with nine seconds left to play but Scranton University rushed down the floor and hit a game-winning jumper as time expired to escape with an 83-82 win Wednesday night in a Landmark Conference game on O.W. Houts Gymnasium in Selinsgrove.

The loss eliminated Susquehanna (9-14 overall, 6-7 Landmark) from playoff contention and pushed Scranton (12-12, 8-5) into a tie for fourth place with Catholic for the final playoff spot.

Susquehanna took a nine-point lead at the halftime break but Scranton opened the second half with a 13-5 run including three 3-pointers to close the gap and neither team held more than a five-point lead for the rest of the game.

A Traub three-point play with five minutes to play gave the River Hawks a one-point lead at 72-71 but the Royals answered with a pair of layups and a free throw to take a five-point edge at 77-72 with two minutes left.

Less than a minute later, Hoagland hit the first of three layups to trim the lead to a basket at 79-76. After a shot clock violation on its next possession, Scranton allowed Hoagland to drive the baseline again and despite the missed layup, Traub was there for the rebound and tip-in to cut the lead to a point at 79-78 with 31 seconds to go.

The Royals hit a pair of free throws after a quick foul with 29.8 seconds left and Hoagland drove through the lane for another layup at the 16-second mark and Susquehanna called a quick timeout.

Scranton inbounded the ball but Seth Callahan forced the turnover with a possession arrow tie-up, giving the River Hawks a chance to take the lead.

Hoagland drove baseline again and flipped a shot in on the layup with nine seconds left for the lead.

Scranton opted not to call timeout but instead moved the ball quickly up the court for a final shot and hit an open jumper from just inside the free throw line as time expired for the winning shot.

Traub came off the bench to lead all scorers with 25 points, Hoagland added 18 and Bryce Butler chipped in 10. Matt LaCorte had a team-best nine rebounds and Hoagland handed out nine assists.

The River Hawks wrap up the season with a home game against Elizabethtown Saturday with the three seniors on the squad – Traub, Adam Dizbon and Glen Nanius – all being honored prior to the start of the game.
