Cole Luzins Homers but River Hawks Fall

Cole Luzins hit a solo homerun in the fourth inning, but it was not enough as Susquehanna fell 8-1 to Christopher Newport Saturday afternoon at Captains Park in Newport News, Virginia.

Susquehanna (0-2) threatened early, with Ryan Casey leading off the game with a walk. The next two batters were retired but Casey was able to get in scoring position by stealing second. Ben Burman reached on a single to the shortstop, but Casey was thrown out at home trying to score on the play.

Christopher Newport (7-2) scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning courtesy of a three-run home run and added another run in the third before the River Hawks could get on the board.

Luzins lead off the top of the fourth with his solo blast to bring the score to 4-1. That is where the score would remain until Christopher Newport added four runs in the seventh inning.

With one out in the sixth, Luzins was hit by a pitch, but then erased on an inning ending double play.

Bobby Grigas started for the River Hawks, giving up four runs over six innings of work. Ryan Beckwith closed out the game pitching 1.2 innings without giving up a run.

Susquehanna will close out the opening weekend of the season Sunday with a game against Oswego State at 11 am at Captains Park.
