Men's Lacrosse Falls to Nationally Ranked Diplomats

Jake Smolokoff scored back-to-back goals in the third quarter to help the Susquehanna University Men's Lacrosse team trim a Franklin and Marshall lead to seven but the Diplomats, ranked #11 in the latest USILA National Poll, closed out the game with six of the final seven goals to post a 20-8 victory Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference game on Sassafras Field in Selinsgrove.

Alec Tzaneteas and Preston Ouellette each scored goals in the first half of the first quarter to give Susquehanna (1-3) a 2-1 edge but Franklin and Marshall (3-0) answered with three straight goals in a span of two minutes to take a 4-2 edge.

Ouellette added his second goal of the game with four minutes left in the opening quarter as the River Hawks cut the lead to 4-3 entering the second period.

The Diplomats scored four of the first five goals in the second quarter to take an 8-4 lead. Tzaneteas scored his second of the game in the middle of the run and Andrew Porzio scored at the 7:32 mark to trim the lead to 8-5.

Franklin and Marshall scored the final three goals of the first half and added three more in the first six minutes of the third quarter to take a 14-5 lead.

Smolokoff scored his two consecutive goals to make it a seven-goal game but the Diplomats added a late goal in the third quarter and scored the first three goals of the fourth to regain control.

Tyler Lewis scored his first career goal for the River Hawks in the fourth quarter with an assist from fellow freshman Colton Dick but the Diplomats scored the final two goals including one with two seconds left for the final margin of victory.

Smolokoff, Tzaneteas and Ouellette each scored twice and Porzio added a goal and an assist for the River Hawks. Pierce Mead led the way with six groundballs and Dylan Abplanalp made 10 saves in the first half before Josh Weaver and Tyler Gross combined to make five saves in the second half.

The River Hawks wrap up a four-game home stand with Washington and Jefferson at 6 p.m. Friday os Sassafras Field.
