Women's Lacrosse Uses Dominant First Half to Down Lycoming

Kathrina DeMaio scored five goals and added three assists while Stephanie Dowling had four goals and one assist for the Susquehanna University Women's Lacrosse team as the River Hawks outscored Lycoming 12-4 in the first half on the way to an 18-11 victory in a non-conference game Tuesday afternoon at the Shangraw Athletic Complex in Williamsport.

Lycoming (3-5) tallied the first goal of the game just 19 seconds into the contest to give them an early 1-0 lead. The River Hawks (2-4) answered with five straight goals to firmly gain control over the Warriors.

DeMaio got it started with a goal with 27:39 remaining in the first half. Just over 30 seconds later, Gabi Toohey scored off a feed from Dowling to give the River Hawks a lead that they would keep for the remainder of the contest.

DeMaio continued her great start with another goal a few minutes later and Dowling was able to score her first goal of the game moments after on an assist by Caroline Rabiecki.

Susquehanna concluded a dominant opening 10 minutes with a goal by Christine Hoerman to open a 5-1 advantage.

After Lycoming scored a free position goal, the River Hawks bounced back when Toohey scored on an assist from Hoerman. Five minutes later, DeMaio scored her third goal of the game with 13:52 remaining in the half as Susquehanna expanded their lead to 7-2.

The Warriors scored another free position goal less than a minute later, but the River Hawks continued to keep the pressure on by scoring two more goals shortly after. Dowling scored another goal on a Toohey assist and Hoerman scored her second goal of the game on a feed from DeMaio.

Leading 9-3, the River Hawks relinquished another goal with 3:53 remaining before closing the half strong. DeMaio scored a man-up free-position goal a minute later and Brooke Klair capitalized on another free-position opportunity before Dowling scored in the final second of the half to close out a dominant first half and take a 12-4 lead into the closing 30 minutes of play.

DeMaio continued her fine play right where she left off when she scored the first goal of the second half with 26:17 remaining. The River Hawks lead reached 10 when Klair followed her with another goal and the lead was pushed to 14-4.

The Warriors netted their first goal of the second half with 22:23 remaining but Susquehanna pushed its lead to 16-5 when Hoerman and Dowling answered with goals over the next five minutes of play.

Lycoming finished the game strong by slowly trimming the lead down, but it was not enough and the River Hawks came away with the 18-11 victory.

Toohey and Rabiecki scored the final two goals of the contest and Libby Dex had eight saves for Susquehanna. The River Hawks won the battle for ground balls 21-10.

DeMaio finished with eight points on five goals and Dowling recorded five points on four goals. Toohey and Hoerman notched three goals each. Klair led the team with six draw controls while Mel Barracato picked up a team-leading four ground balls.

Susquehanna now comes home and will take on Moravian Friday at 4 p.m.
