Box Score Tom Giaimo was 4-for-5 with a run scored and a run batted in for the Susquehanna University Baseball team Wednesday afternoon in the home opener but the River Hawks surrendered six runs in the top of the first inning and dropped an 8-2 decision to Rutgers-Camden on Bollinger Field in Selinsgrove.
Rutgers-Camden (7-5) scored six runs with two outs in the first inning to take the early lead. Susquehanna (3-11) answered with a single run in the bottom half of the inning.
Giaimo led off the bottom of the first inning with a single through the left side of the infield and after Nick Berger singled, a double-play ball moved Giaimo to third. With two outs, Ben Burman doubled to left centerfield to score Giaimo.
The Raptors extended their lead with single runs in the third and fourth innings and held an 8-1 lead until the seventh inning.
In the seventh, Cameron Ott led off the inning with a bunt single to toward third base and with one out, advanced to second on a passed ball. Justin Miller walked and with two outs, Giaimo singled to right field to score Ott but the River Hawks could not get any closer.
Susquehanna used eight pitchers in the game with only reliever Brendan Damiano going more than an inning. Damiano went two innings allowing a run on three hits with three strike outs. The pitchers combined to strike out nine batters but walked 12 and surrendered 11 hits.
Giaimo was 4-for-5 while Cole Luzins and Burman each recorded a pair of hits including one double each.
The River Hawks open the Landmark Conference schedule Friday hosting Catholic University with a single game at 4 p.m. followed by a doubleheader Saturday against the Cardinals with a 12:30 p.m. start.
