Baseball Drops Two Close Games in New Jersey

Cole Luzins, Nick Berger and Tom Giaimo were all 2-for-4 and Berger had four runs batted in for the Susquehanna University Baseball team Saturday but the River Hawks dropped an 11-8 decision to Kean in the opener and then fell 3-1 to Ramapo in game two on the day at Kean University in New Jersey.

Susquehanna (0-5) came back from an early 5-0 deficit against Kean (5-3) before rallying for five runs in the sixth inning to tie the score.

In the sixth, Luzins, Ben Burman and Jack Carroll all walked with one out before Berger doubled to left field to score all three runners. Giaimo followed with a triple and came home on a wild pitch to knot the game at 5-5.

The Cougars regained the lead in the bottom half of the inning with a pair of runs before Susquehanna scored a run in the seventh to stay close.

Luzins doubled with two outs in the seventh and scored on a Burman single.

Kean regained the multi-run lead with four runs in the seventh and Susquehanna scored twice in the ninth for the final score. Pete Yarem and Berger each drove home runs in the ninth. 

Luzins had three runs scored and a double, Yarem was 2-for-2 and Giaimo had a run, an RBI and a triple.

In the second game of the day, Ramapo took an early 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the second and Susquehanna cut the lead in half with a run in the third.

Luke Tuttle drew a one-out walk and moved to third on a Craig Roumes double before Ryan Casey singled to left to drive home Tuttle.

The score remained 2-1 until the eighth inning when the Roadrunners added a final run to post the 3-1 win.

Roumes finished 2-for-3 with a double and a triple and Casey was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Bobby Grigas started and went seven strong innings allowing two runs on five hits and striking out four batters.

The River Hawks are off until March 11 against Arcadia in the first game of the Spring Training trip to Florida.
