Men's Lacrosse Comes Back for Big Road Win

Box Score

Jack Donnelly scored three of his team-leading four points with two goals and an assist in the last three goals for the Susquehanna University Men's Lacrosse team as the River Hawks came from behind to post an 8-6 win over Moravian College Friday afternoon in a Landmark Conference game on John Makuvek Field in Bethlehem.

Alec Tzaneteas, Andrew Porzio and Donnelly each scored goals in the first eight minutes of the contest to give Susquehanna (7-4 overall, 2-0 Landmark) and early 3-0 lead. Jake Smolokoff, Jack Gerrity and Jack DeGregorio each assisted on the first three goals.

Moravian (4-4, 0-1) battled back with a late first quarter goal and then netted all five goals in the second quarter to give the Greyhounds a 6-3 edge at the halftime intermission.

In the second half, Travis Belt forced a turnover near midfield before Colton Dick picked up the loose ball and raced in for a breakaway and scored to trim the lead to 6-4 just 3:36 into the third quarter.

Porzio made it a one-goal game at the 4:37 mark with a man-up goal off a feed from Tzaneteas.

Two minutes later, Dick assisted on a Donnelly man-up goal that tied the game with 2:27 left to play in the third quarter as the River Hawks tied the game at 6-6.

Donnelly added another man-up goal five minutes into the final quarter that gave Susquehanna a 7-6 lead.

It remained a one-goal lead for the next six minutes of back-and-forth action as each team created scoring opportunities but the respective goalies kept the lead at a goal.

Belt made another great defensive play on a Moravian clearing attempt and forced a turnover. Donnelly picked up the ground ball and fed Porzio for the quick transition goal to extend the lead to 8-6.

The River Hawks defense fought off two man-down situations in the closing minutes and Dylan Abplanalp intercepted a pass with less than a minute to play to seal the victory.

Donnelly led the way with four points on three goals and Porzio added three goals for the River Hawks. Tzaneteas finished with a goal and two assists while Dick had a goal and an assist. Donnelly, Pierce Mead, Abplanalp and Dan Murphy had four ground balls each and Belt led the team with two caused turnovers.

Abplanalp finished with 10 saves including four in the fourth quarter as Susquehanna outscored Moravian 5-0 in the second half.

The River Hawks will face Catholic April 7 with a 1 p.m. Landmark Conference game in Washington for their next contest.
