Baseball Comes Back to Win Weekend Series over Catholic

Will Carey came on in relief and tossed four solid innings allowing just one hit as he gave the Susquehanna University Baseball team a chance to come back and the River Hawks responded with two runs in the sixth and a run in the seventh to post a 7-5 victory over Catholic University Saturday afternoon in the second game of a Landmark Conference doubleheader to complete the three-game conference series.

Susquehanna (5-12 overall, 2-1 Landmark) won the first game of the series Friday and earned a split of the Saturday doubleheader as Catholic (15-5, 5-4) won the first game Saturday with an 8-3 victory before the River Hawks with the night cap 7-5.

In game one Saturday, the River Hawks were limited to four hits with Craig Roumes hitting a double and Justin Miller leading the offense with a pair of hits and two runs batted in.

Catholic scored single runs in each of the first two innings and Susquehanna cut the lead in half with a run in the third. The Cardinals opened up a lead with three runs in the fifth.

The River Hawks scored in the bottom of the fifth but Catholic added three more runs in the seventh to seal the victory.

Game two was scoreless until the fourth inning when Catholic opened the scoring with a solo home run.

In the bottom of the fourth, Susquehanna rallied for four runs to take the lead.

With one out, Nick Berger drew a walk and Roumes followed with a single down the line. Jimmy Loftus reached base on an error to load the bases. Anthony Dombrowski drew a walk to force home the tying run and later with two outs, Susquehanna added runs on another error and a Cole Luzins tw0 RBI single for the 4-1 lead.

Catholic battled back for a run in the fifth and regained the lead with three runs in the sixth.

The lead did not last long as Susquehanna answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning.

After Tom Giaimo led off the inning with a walk, Miller cracked a homer to right field to give the River Hawks a 6-5 lead. Roumes scored on a passed ball in the seventh inning to cap the scoring and give Susquehanna the conference series as the River Hawks won two-of-three.

Ben Burman led the offense in game two going 3-for-4 while Roumes and Luzins each had a pair of hits. Miller and Luzing had two runs batted in each.

The River Hawks are scheduled to play at Keystone Tuesday and return home Wednesday to face Alvernia.
