Box Score 2 Gabby Bubba pitched a combined 9 1/3 innings of relief without giving up a run and Heather Pearson had a team leading five hits for the Susquehanna University Softball team as the River Hawks scored a pair of extra-inning victories in their first Landmark Conference doubleheader of the season Saturday afternoon in Washington, D.C.
The River Hawks (10-6 Overall, 2-0 Landmark) had 10 hits in game one and scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning to win 5-3.
With a 1-0 lead in the third inning, Emilie Boman and McKayla Brady had back-to-back RBI singles to give the River Hawks a 3-0 lead. The Cardinals (10-10, 2-4) would bounce back with two runs in the bottom of the inning and tallied another run in the fourth to tie the game at three.
The score remained tied into extra innings with Bubba on in relief until the top of the ninth inning when the River Hawks scored twice to take a 5-3 lead.
After a Pearson double and a Brooke Kohler sacrifice bunt to move her over to third, the lead run was scored after Boman reached first on an error. Holly Young pinch ran for Boman and stole second base and scored an insurance run on an RBI single by Kasey Bost.
Bubba worked around a two out walk in the bottom of the ninth and cemented the victory for the River Hawks.
Pearson, Boman and Brady all had two hits for Susquehanna in game one. Bubba pitched 5 2/3 innings in relief without surrendering a run.
In game two, the River Hawks scored eight runs on 10 hits, including five runs in the top of the 10th inning to defeat Catholic 8-3.
Susquehanna got the scoring started with an RBI triple by Leigh Ann Greenwald and an RBI single by Jackie Gore. The River Hawks tacked on another run in the top of the sixth inning when Gore brought home Greenwald for the second time on an RBI double.
Catholic was able to score three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to knot the game up at three.
Bubba kept the Cardinals at bay in extra innings, and the River Hawks were able to break the game open in the 10th by scoring five runs.
With Emily Lear placed on second base for the International tie-breaker, Pearson hit a double to bring her home and give the River Hawks a 4-3 lead. After Morgan Derrick brought in Pearson after reaching on an error, Boman hit an opposite field home run to double the advantage.
The River Hawks were able to tack on another insurance run and Bubba worked through the bottom of the inning without allowing a run to close out the doubleheader with an 8-3 victory.
Amanda Seckinger got the start and threw 6 1/3 innings while giving up three runs on seven hits. Bubba threw 3 2/3 shutout innings in relief.
Gore had three hits and three RBI. Pearson added three hits and an RBI and Boman had two RBI on her 10th inning home run.
Susquehanna's defense shined as they did not commit an error in either game.
The River Hawks come home to Sassafras Field for a doubleheader Wednesday against Messiah. Game one is at 3 p.m. and game two is scheduled to start at approximately 5 p.m.
