Box Score 2 Six different players drove in at least one run in an 8-run first inning and Alexa Gonzalez pitched a complete game as the Susquehanna University Softball team capitalized on the big first inning to post an 11-1 game one victory before dropping game two 1-0 in a Landmark Conference doubleheader against the University of Scranton Tuesday afternoon at Sassafras Field in Selinsgrove.
In game one, Heather Pearson got things started with a leadoff double. Brooke Kohler scored her on an RBI single to give Susquehanna (13-9, 3-3) an early 1-0 edge. After an Emilie Boman single, McKayla Brady hit an RBI single to double the lead.
With one out in the inning and runners on first and third base, Jackie Gore hit an RBI double that scored Boman and advanced Brady to third. Kasey Bost kept the line moving with an RBI single and extended the lead to 4-0.
After Kelly Miller was hit by a pitch, Kat Fahsbender hit a two-run single with the bases loaded to break the game open early. With two outs and Fahsbender on second base, Pearson connected on her second hit of the inning to drive home Fahsbender. Kohler drove home Pearson on an RBI single to give Susquehanna an 8-0 lead before the side was retired.
Scranton (15-3, 3-1) got on the board with a single run in the top of the second inning, but the River Hawks rallied with three more in the bottom of the inning to extend the lead to 11-1. Bost and Miller provided the run-scoring hits in the inning.
After the second inning, no runs were scored and Gonzalez shut down the Scranton lineup to cement the 11-1 five-inning victory for her team-leading sixth win of the year.
In game two, the Royals got on the board in the top of the first inning and were able to shut down the hot bats of Susquehanna to hold on for a 1-0 victory. Gabby Bubba threw six scoreless innings of relief.
Six batters had a hit apiece for the River Hawks.
Susquehanna will now take on Penn College in a double header Wednesday at Sassafras Field. Game one is at 3 p.m.
