Baseball Splits Doubleheader at Juniata

Ben Burman had a pair of hits in each game and Cole Luzins hit a home run in game one as the Susquehanna University Baseball team split a doubleheader with Juniata College Saturday afternoon in Huntingdon. The two teams will complete the three-game Landmark Conference series Sunday.

After four innings of a scoreless pitcher's duel in game one, Luzins – who was crowned Mr. SU earlier in the week – hit a solo home run with two outs to break the scoreless tie. Burman followed with a single and advanced into scoring position with an error before Tom Giaimo singled to score Burman for the 2-0 Susquehanna (8-16 overall, 4-4 Landmark) lead.

That was all that starting pitcher Bobby Grigas needed as he limited Juniata (8-18, 3-8) to five hits on the day. Grigas recorded a pair of 1-2-3 innings in the fifth and sixth and then pitched his way out of a jam in the seventh when the Eagles recorded a pair of singles to start the inning.

Grigas finished with a complete-game (seven innings) allowing five hits and striking out seven batters.

In game two, Juniata jumped out to an early lead with five runs in the first three inning before Susquehanna started to chip away at the lead.

The River Hawks scored twice in the fourth to make it a 5-2 game. The Eagles answered with two runs in the fifth before Susquehanna rallied for four runs in the sixth to trim the lead to 7-6.

In the sixth, Nick Berger started the inning as he reached base after being hit by pitch and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Steve Lorenz followed with a double to score Berger. With one out, Anthony Dombrowski walked before Craig Roumes doubled to score both Loranz and Dombrowski.

Justin Miller followed with a run-scoring single to plate Roumes and bring the River Hawks to within a run at 7-6.

The Susquehanna pitching staff retired six of the next seven batters but in the eighth inning, allowed four runs as the Eagles extended the lead to split the doubleheader.

Burman was 2-for-4 in the opener and 2-for-5 in the night cap while Giaimo added three hits on the day and Roumes recorded three runs batted in.

The River Hawks continue the three-game series at 12 p.m. Sunday and host non-conference games against Neumann and Messiah on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively.
