Pitching Dominates Franklin and Marshall in Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Alexa Gonzalez tossed another complete game and freshmen Brooke Wiarda and Gabby Bubba combined to shut down the Franklin & Marshall bats as the Susquehanna University Softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader from the Diplomats Sunday. The River Hawks won 5-1 and 9-1.

In game one, Franklin & Marshall (12-12) broke the scoreless tie in the fourth inning with a run off a leadoff single followed by a double down the line. Gonzalez retired the next three batters for Susquehanna (15-9) to limit the damage.

In the bottom half of the inning, pinch runner Kody Streeter scored on a Kasey Bost single to tie the game.

Kelly Miller singled and advanced to third on a throwing error before scoring on a passed ball to give the River Hawks the lead.

Susquehanna broke the game open in the sixth with three runs. Miller doubled to score Leigh Ann Greenwald and then Heather Pearson doubled home a pair of runs for the 5-1 lead.

Gonzalez allowed one run on seven hits with two strikeouts.

In game two, Wiarda started and got run support as the River Hawks scored single runs in both the first and second innings. Pearson scored on a fielder's choice play in the first and then singled in the second inning to score Emily Lear for the 2-0 lead.

The Diplomats cut the lead in half with a run in the third inning but the Susquehanna offense pushed across four runs in the fourth to open up a lead.

With one out in the fourth, Miller, Lear and Pearson hit consecutive singles to load the bases. Brooke Kohler forced one run home after being hit by pitch. Emilie Boman plated two more runners with a single through the left side of the infield before McKayla Brady doubled to center field to score pinch runner Holly Young to give the River Hawks a 6-1 advantage.

Susquehanna added a run in the fifth on a Pearson run-scoring single and then won the game in the sixth as two more runners scored for the run-rule victory.

In the sixth, Morgan Derrick walked and Kasey Bost doubled to put runners at second and third. Ellen Smith had a pinch hit single to score Derrick and Sam Duplissey ended the game with a double to right center to score Bost and give Susquehanna the eight-run lead and end the game.

Wiarda earned her first career victory as she allowed five hits and struck out three batters in five innings while Bubba retired three of the five batters she faced in the sixth.

At the plate, Pearson was 5-for-6 with two runs and four RBI, Lear was 2-for-3 with three runs while Bost and Miller were each 3-for-6.

The River Hawks continue non-conference play Tuesday with a 3 p.m. doubleheader against Wilkes University on Sassafras Field.
